Privacy Policy

Last updated 7 October 2026

Trailhead runs on your phone and has no account, no analytics and no adverts, and nothing you do in it is sent to Clive Walkden or anyone else. By default it does not use the internet at all. If you turn on Check for new programmes, it uses the internet only to fetch programmes, and sends nothing about you.

What Trailhead reads from Health Connect

With your permission, Trailhead reads three things: your weight, your body fat percentage and your height. It does not read anything else, such as heart rate, sleep or location.

Trailhead also asks to read past Health Connect data. Without that, Android only lets an app see records from the 30 days before you first allowed it, which can hide a height you recorded months ago — in Cairn, for instance.

These readings show your starting point, save a before-and-after snapshot when you begin a programme, finish each phase and finish the programme, and show how they've changed on the Progress screen. Nothing else. You can stop this at any time in Health Connect by removing Trailhead's permissions; Trailhead keeps working without them, you just won't see body measurements.

What Trailhead writes to Health Connect

Trailhead can save the guided workouts you do to Health Connect as exercise sessions. This is off by default, and only starts if you turn on Save to Health Connect before a workout.

Each saved session has the workout's name, its start and end time, a type such as strength training or calisthenics, and a short note of which programme and session it was and how many exercises you finished. Nothing else is written, and Trailhead never changes your weight, body fat or height.

Once a session is in Health Connect it belongs to Health Connect and to you. Other apps you've allowed to read exercise data can see it. You can delete it in Health Connect at any time, and removing Trailhead does not delete it.

Backing up your progress

Trailhead is left out of Android's cloud backup on purpose, so reinstalling or setting up a new phone from scratch would normally lose your progress. Open Settings (the cog at the top of the home screen), tap Back up, and choose where to save the file, for example Downloads or your Drive. To bring it back, tap Restore and pick that file.

The backup file contains your programme runs, the sessions you marked done or skipped, and your body-measurement snapshots — not your settings. It's plain text and is not encrypted, so keep it somewhere private.

Trailhead only writes the file when you ask, only to the place you choose, and never sends it anywhere. Restoring replaces what's in Trailhead with what's in the file, and asks you to confirm first.

Checking for new programmes

Trailhead comes with a few programmes. More are published at trailhead.clivewalkden.co.uk, hosted by Cloudflare, and Trailhead can check that site for new and updated programmes and download them. This is off until you turn it on, from the question on the home screen or the switch in Settings, and you can turn it off again at any time.

When it's on, Trailhead reads a list of programmes when you open the app, at most once a day, and when you tap Check now. It downloads a programme only when you ask. Everything it downloads is checked first: the list is digitally signed, and a file that doesn't match its signature or fingerprint is thrown away.

What's sent is an ordinary request for a public file. It carries no name, progress, measurements, settings or identifier of any kind. As with any website, the host's servers can see your phone's internet address and the time of the request — Trailhead doesn't use that, and adds no cookies, accounts, analytics or advertising.

Stored on your phone: the programmes you download, a note of when Trailhead last checked, and which new programmes you've dismissed. Turn the setting off and Trailhead stops connecting; programmes already downloaded stay until you clear Trailhead's storage or uninstall it.

What Trailhead stores on your phone

All of it stays in the app's private storage, is not sent anywhere, and is excluded from Android's cloud backup. A direct phone-to-phone transfer can carry it to a new device.

Notifications

If you switch on reminders, Trailhead shows a notification on your training days at the time you choose, created on your phone by an alarm on your phone. Its buttons, Mark done and Not today, only update the progress stored on your phone.
